Favourites.. A Book Of Horrors

This book is a collection of short stories compiled by Stephen Jones, an acclaimed horror editor. I had heard many good things about his collections so when I saw 'A Book Of Horrors' in a cheap bookshop I decided to have faith and explore some of his favorite short stories from the horror genre. I was not disappointed as I had no real expectations but the book didn't turn out how I expected it to. The horror stories were more psychological and 'keep you on edge' type of story's rather than horrific scenes and scary stories but I was still impressed, regardless of what I was expecting. A lot of people have been saying how its worse than Jones' other compilations but I had no other experiences to compare to so I have a fairly good review. There were three short stories which really impressed me. The first of which was Peter Crowther's 'Ghosts with Teeth'. The reason I enjoyed this story is because it was the type of story I was expecting; it was a ghostly story, sending chills down your spine, with a confusing storyline open to your own opinion on what actually took place. The second was Reggie Oliver's 'A Child's Problem'. I liked this story due to the atmosphere which was given off, making you feel on edge a large majority of the time. It also had a relatable part to it with the setting of a dark, mysterious abbey (something which nearly everyone has seen) and the uncle who you either tread very carefully around or need to act like an adult around constantly or you will get into trouble. The third story I loved was 'Near Zennor' by Elizabeth Hand, even though it took a while to pick up pace, it left you with a chill and almost haunts you for a while, just what you want from something of the horror genre. One of the things I am disappointed with in this book is how they used Stephen King's 'Little God Of Agony' story as a hook and for an audience to begin the book with, as, in personal opinion, it wasn't as good as some of the other stories and it appears as though they have used his story, and King's fame in the genre, to sell books rather than to create a brilliant collection of literature. With exception to this particular downfall I found the short stories a brilliant escape and insight into new and different authors to what I am used too. I would rate this book a 3/5 as I did struggle with some storylines and to be frank these bored me a little. A Book Of Horrors is available on Amazon for £8.57 but I recommend you search through eBay to find it for a cheaper price as it is quite good but maybe not worth this price.

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (film)

Infinite playlist.jpg
Today I have been off ill and I decided to spend my day catching up on all the films I wanted to watch or the ones I brought on a wim. One of those films was 'Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist' starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings, based on the book of the same name. Incase you are wondering what it about the here is the description: "After a chance encounter, Nick and Norah embark on a journey through New York's indie rock scene on a quest to find the secret show of a legendary band, and wind  up finding each other." However, after watching this film I wouldn't describe it this way but thats not to say it wasn't a great film. Also, the tagline is "Every night has a soundtrack" which doesn't really follow the films story as there was a lack of actual music playing and 'soundtracks' but more talk of music and songs being played in the background. Overall I enjoyed the film in the heartwarming, happy ending sense and I was left with a content feeling, but, in my eyes, this follows the classic type of film whose characters and story line floats around music, which, when you've seen quite a few of them, does get a bit boring. I still found myself being dragged into the story though and my desire to scream at Cera's character 'Nick' was unbelievable. Another character I found myself wanting to shout at was 'Tris' played by Alexis Dziena but for different reasons, she's a total cow in the film. One thing I did admire about this film is the involvement with the gay scene which I think has made the film look more interesting and enabled it to take a slightly different  route with the storyline and how the characters are able to interact. I have also decided to look for the book as I am interested in seeing how the book has been interpreted and, as they say, the book is alway better than the film. I think I would rate this a strong 7 out of 10 and its currently £1.72 on Amazon.

Just a hi

Hey! So I thought I would start a blog where I can basically just tell everyone my thoughts on everything, things it would recommend any other boring stuff that I'm hoping someone will find interesting. I'm very into books, music, films and photography which I think I'm good but I guess that's debatable really. I also have a love for animals, and yes that does include the creepy horrible ones, and I hope to be able to work with them one day. So for now I'm going to go but you can follow me on Twitter and Instagram (if you search Sunbran I will be there somewhere) and I will come back with something more interesting to say soon. Another thing you can do is check out my page on bracelet tutorials which is on my personal account: http://braceletsbysunbran.blogspot.co.uk/
Bye!
